Intro to Spanish
for 3rd-5th graders

In this Intro to Spanish class, students will learn the basics of Spanish like greetings, introductions, numbers, colors, alphabet and proper pronunciation.  

Intro to Spanish is an 8-week class for students in 3rd-5th grades. This beginning Spanish class requires no prior Spanish knowledge. Students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar concepts that will set a foundation on which they can continue to build.  Since immersion is the best way to learn a new language, much of the class will be conducted in Spanish with occasional instruction in English as needed. Classes will combine speaking, reading, writing and listening skills in an engaging and creative way. 

Duration: Intro to Spanish class will meet weekly for 55 minutes each over 8 weeks


Location: Shawnee, KS


Cost:  $130 for 8 classes 

Class sizes will be limited to 11 students and registration will be accepted on a first come basis.



1 / Greetings/Introductions

  • Practice the following flashcards (that you made for hmwk)

    1. ¿Cómo te llamas?

    2. ¿Cómo se llama usted?

    3. Me llamo…

    4. ¿Y tú?

    5. ¿Y usted?

    6. Mucho gusto

  • Practice introducing yourself (in Spanish) to your family members, friends you see, your stuffed animals, your pets etc. (use appropriate questioning depending on if it is an adult or child)

2 / Numbers Practice
  • Go on a walk around your neighborhood (with your mom and dad) stopping at houses to say the house numbers one number at a time. 

  • Count how many you have of the following items around your house. Say each number (in Spanish) as you count them.

    • Refrigerators​

    • Tvs

    • Plants

    • Couches

    • Beds

    • Toilets

  • Have a family member gather items or look around the room counting different objects.  (Be sure to put them back!)

3 / Alphabet/Pronunciation Practice 
  • Practice spelling numbers 1-10 out loud using alphabet pronunciation guide 

  • Spell each family member’s name

  • Write down 5 friends names and spell them out loud

  • Practice spelling your (Spanish) colors out loud, one letter at a time.

  • As you drive around, spell street signs, billboards, names of businesses etc. in Spanish.
